What Is an RSS Feed?

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication, also known as Rich Site Summary, with extensions, .rss, .xml, etc. It was created in the year 1996. It is a kind of format (mostly XML) to market data entries in a web, like blog entries, advertisements, discussions in a discussion forum, etc. Any RSS tracking document is called as a feed or a channel. It will contain the full data as a summary, the author's name and date of publication. This RSS feed is mainly subscribed by users to get timely updates from the site. Also, these are used in websites to increase the traffic (i.e. making the number of people visiting their site greater) so as to advertise and popularize their sites. This may increase the user interaction to your web site and thus make it more popular among people. This is because, people who gain frequent updates will come back to your web site again to know more about the summarized content that they receive. This can thus, generate more profit too, for your site.

If the reader wants to subscribe to the RSS feed, he can do so by clicking on the 'RSS' icon. What exactly happens is that the content provider's site link gets published. There is a special kind of software called the RSS reader or an aggregator which checks for the user's subscription and sends the updates to the user accordingly. The reader actually checks for the XML document that is not available to the user.

Several peer to peer file sharing systems also use RSS feed. The client applications will be able to download the required data / file from the network, once the RSS reader software is able to identify the subscription of that peer. You can browse over the net for knowing the ways to use RSS feeds in your site to gain traffic.
